At Strathmore North Primary School, our Mathematics program is guided by the Victorian Curriculum and is designed to develop confident, capable mathematicians. Across all year levels, students engage in the interconnected strands of Number, Algebra, Measurement, Space, Statistics and Probability. A key focus of our program is developing proficiency in Mathematics through the four proficiencies: Understanding, Fluency, Reasoning and Problem-Solving. These proficiencies support students to build deep conceptual knowledge, apply efficient strategies, think critically, and solve real-world problems with confidence.
Foundation to Year 2:
In Foundation to Year 2, students build strong mathematical foundations through hands-on, engaging learning experiences. There is an emphasis on developing number sense, place value, and early addition and subtraction strategies, alongside exploring patterns, measurement, shapes, and data. Students are supported to explain their thinking, use mathematical language, and develop confidence in applying their knowledge to everyday situations.
Year 3 to Year 6:
From Year 3 to Year 6, students extend their mathematical understanding and become more independent problem solvers. They work with larger numbers, fractions, decimals, and percentages, and apply efficient strategies to solve increasingly complex problems. Students engage in mathematical modelling, reasoning, and investigations, using a range of tools and representations to justify their thinking. Across all year levels, learning is differentiated to meet the needs of every student, with teachers using evidence-based practices and ongoing assessment to monitor progress and support each learner along the continuum.
