At Strathmore North Primary School, our English program is developed following the Victorian Curriculum and designed to develop confident, capable communicators through reading, writing, and speaking and listening.
Foundation to Year 2:
In Foundation to Year 2, there is a strong emphasis on building essential literacy foundations. Students engage in explicit instruction through Little Learners Love Literacy, a systematic, synthetic phonics program that teaches the relationship between sounds and letters in a clear and structured sequence. This is supported by rich reading experiences that develop fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
Writing focuses on constructing sentences and simple texts across a range of genres, while oral language is strengthened through discussion, storytelling, and shared learning experiences that connect speaking, reading, and writing.
Year 3 to Year 6:
From Year 3 to Year 6, students build on these foundations to become more independent and reflective learners. Reading focuses on deeper comprehension, analysis, and engagement with a wide range of texts, including novels and informational sources.
Writing develops through a structured process of planning, drafting, revising, and publishing across various genres, with increasing attention to audience, purpose, and language features. Students also participate in explicit spelling instruction and continue to refine their handwriting and presentation skills, while developing confidence in speaking and listening through discussions, presentations, and collaborative learning.
Across all year levels, our English program is differentiated to meet the diverse needs of learners, ensuring every student is supported and challenged along the learning continuum. Teachers use consistent, evidence-based practices and ongoing assessment to monitor progress and tailor instruction, while encouraging strong reading habits and meaningful learning connections between school and home.
